A dental bridge replaces missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth (pontics) to adjacent natural teeth or implants. It differs from a crown in its purpose to fill gaps caused by missing teeth.

The process is similar, usually requiring 3 visits. The 1st visit involves preparation, impressions, and placing a temporary bridge. The 2nd visit includes try-in of the permanent bridge and then sending back to the lab for any final adjustment to the appearance and function of the bridge. The Final visit then consists fitting the permanent bridge.

Types include conventional, cantilever, Maryland, and implant-supported bridges. Your dentist will assess your case to recommend the most suitable type.
a. Conventional Fixed-Fixed Bridge:
§ This type consists of pontics (artificial teeth) held in place by dental crowns on the adjacent natural teeth. It is suitable when there are natural teeth on both sides of the gap.
b. Cantilever Bridge:
§ In a cantilever bridge, the pontic is supported by dental crowns on only one side of the gap. It is used when there’s only one adjacent natural tooth next to the missing tooth.
c. Maryland Bridge:
§ Also known as a resin-bonded or adhesive bridge, Maryland bridges use a metal or
porcelain framework bonded to the backs of adjacent natural teeth. This type is a
conservative option, preserving the structure of supporting teeth.
d. Implant-Supported Bridge:
§ Implant-supported bridges are secured in place by dental implants rather than natural teeth. Implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for the bridge. This type is suitable for cases with multiple missing teeth or when natural teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge.

The procedure is generally not painful, as it’s done under local anesthesia. Some discomfort may be experienced after the bridge is placed, but it’s usually temporary.

Once you get used to the bridge, you can eat normally. However, initially, it’s advisable to stick to softer foods while you adjust.

Dental bridges can last 8-15 years or more. Maintaining good oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and avoiding habits that could stress the bridge can extend its lifespan.

Regular brushing and flossing, including cleaning under the bridge, are crucial. Your dentist may recommend special floss or brushes for effective cleaning.
